Be a GSA Authorized Vendor — We Show You How. It's Not As Hard As You Think.

Southern Interceptors has been an authorized GSA vendor for over 25 years, and their long history proves something most shop owners never realize: government fleet work is accessible, straightforward, and well within reach for any capable automotive business. Every day, thousands of government sedans, SUVs, pickups and vans need tires, brakes, diagnostics, electrical repair, diesel service, collision work and specialized equipment installations before entering service. Private businesses perform a huge amount of that work, and becoming one of those businesses is far easier than most people assume. There are several ways a business can work with federal vehicles, from routine GSA Fleet maintenance to collision repair, upfitting new vehicles, decommissioning retired ones and preparing them for GSA Auctions.

GSA actively seeks repair vendors. Federal vehicles operate everywhere, and a government driver in a small town still needs a battery tomorrow morning or a brake job this week. GSA depends on commercial shops to keep the fleet moving, which means any shop capable of repairing cars, trucks, vans or SUVs already has the foundation to become a federal vendor. The first step is simply contacting your local GSA Fleet servicing office and explaining that you operate an automotive repair facility and want to service GSA Fleet vehicles. You describe your capabilities, and you're offering support to the people responsible for keeping federal vehicles on the road.

The next step is SAM.gov. SAM stands for System for Award Management, the federal government's master database of businesses. Registering in SAM.gov officially places your business in the federal system, assigns you a Unique Entity ID and allows you to participate in larger repairs, upfitting jobs and contract opportunities. The signup process is simple. You create an account, enter your business information, verify your identity, receive your UEI, select the NAICS codes that accurately describe your work and submit your registration. Once registered, your business becomes visible to federal agencies, allowing you to search opportunities, respond to solicitations and be recognized as a legitimate vendor. SAM.gov is the front door to federal work.

After registration, you learn how GSA authorizes repairs. A GSA Fleet vehicle arrives at your shop, the driver provides the vehicle information, you diagnose the issue and determine whether the repair is routine or requires authorization. Routine services may be paid through the GSA Fleet Card, while larger repairs require contacting GSA, providing the vehicle identification, mileage, diagnosis and estimated cost, receiving approval, performing the work and getting paid. Once you understand this system, the process becomes predictable and efficient.

Accepting the GSA Fleet Card streamlines everyday transactions, and once you're comfortable with maintenance work, you can explore larger opportunities such as upfitting new government vehicles. Many federal vehicles require emergency lighting, radios, antennas, consoles, computer mounts, partitions, storage systems or specialized electrical equipment before entering service. Small businesses win these jobs constantly, sometimes for only a handful of vehicles, and in some cases the government ships brand-new vehicles directly to the upfitter before they ever reach the agency. This creates an entirely new revenue stream beyond walk-in repair work.

At the other end of the vehicle's life, agencies pay private businesses to remove radios, computers, emergency lighting and specialized equipment during decommissioning. Some contracts combine decommissioning older vehicles with upfitting their replacements, allowing a business to earn money when a vehicle enters service and again when it leaves service. GSA Auctions create another opportunity because retired vehicles must be received, inspected, photographed, stored, reconditioned and prepared for sale, and private companies handle all of that work. A capable automotive business can become part of the infrastructure through which government vehicles pass before reaching the public.

When you look at the full life of a federal fleet vehicle, a private company may upfit it when it's new, maintain and repair it while it's in service and decommission or prepare it for auction when it retires. One vehicle can generate three separate revenue streams for a single business. Government vehicles operate constantly, age constantly, require service constantly and are replaced constantly. The work is steady, predictable, recession-proof and backed by the largest customer in the country. Shops that register properly, learn the system and deliver reliable work often discover that federal fleet service becomes one of the most lucrative and stable parts of their business. Once you're in the door, the government becomes a long-term revenue engine capable of transforming a small shop into a serious operation.
