North Dakota Sells About 80 State Fleet Vehicles Online November 18 From Fargo, and Publishes Every Price. Last Year's Middle Was $10,250, and a 2015 GMC 3500 Brought $30,000.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation's Fargo State Fleet Vehicle Auction is Wednesday, November 18, at 10 a.m. Central, a live webcast on Orr Auctioneers' site with pre-bidding from November 11, about 80 vehicles, no on-site bidding, a 2.9 percent buyer's premium and viewing on Tuesday, November 17. NDDOT posts a price list after every sale: last November's Fargo sale moved 67 vehicles for $758,100, a middle price of $10,250, with hail damage noted on 29 of them. Here is how the sale works, what the same models brought, and the Bismarck sale that follows on December 2.

FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA — North Dakota runs its state vehicle auctions the way a lot of states will eventually: the cars sit in a Department of Transportation yard, the public walks through them on a Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning an auctioneer sells them over a live webcast to bidders on phones and laptops, with no one allowed to bid from the lot. The next one is the Fargo State Fleet Vehicle Auction, Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 10 a.m. Central, from the NDDOT Fargo District yard at 503 38th Street South. Orr Auctioneers of Jamestown, which runs the state's sales, lists it as approximately 80 well-maintained state fleet vehicles, with pre-bidding open from November 11 and the webcast on the 18th.

What sets North Dakota apart is the paperwork afterward. Within a few days of every sale, NDDOT posts a price list, lot by lot, with the year, model, mileage, the state's own condition notes and the hammer price, and keeps the lists going back years. For a buyer, that record is worth more than the catalog.

What last year's Fargo sale brought

The November 19, 2025 Fargo price list shows 67 lots sold for $758,100, a middle price of $10,250, the lowest $600 and the highest $30,000. The fleet is what a state drives: twenty sedans, Ford Fusion SEs from 2017 to 2019 with 62,000 to 92,000 miles and Chevrolet Impala and Malibu LS models from 2016 with 52,000 to 69,000, which sold in a tight band from $8,750 to $11,000, middle $10,250. Six 2015 Chevrolet Traverse LS SUVs with 60,000 to 74,000 miles brought $9,000 to $10,250. Dodge Caravans from 2012 to 2017 brought $9,750 to $12,000. Three Dodge Journeys, $9,500 to $10,000. Two 2017 Ford Escapes near 97,000 miles, $9,750 and $10,500.

The trucks are where the money went. A 2015 GMC 3500 crew cab 4x4 with 68,627 miles was the top lot at $30,000; three more 2015 GMC 3500 crew cabs with 145,000 to 153,000 miles brought $13,750 to $16,500. A 2013 Ford F-350 Supercab with 46,855 miles made $22,250. Ram 1500 quad cabs from 2013 to 2020 with 85,000 to 136,000 miles sold for $10,500 to $14,500; F-150 Supercabs from 2013 and 2014, $12,250 and $12,500. Three 15-passenger vans, a 2016 Transit, a 2012 E-350 and a 2017 Savana, brought $15,000 to $16,250, and a 2010 E-150 cargo van with 16,531 miles, $13,750. Two 2007 International 7600 tandem dump trucks with spreaders, with 176,000 and 288,000 miles and the state's notes about a rusted hoist tower and a leaking hoist cylinder, went for $19,250 and $15,500; a 2010 Peterbilt 320 garbage truck with a 40-yard Heil body that "needs work" sold for $8,500.

The police lots were the Highway Patrol's: a 2016 Dodge Charger AWD with 47,320 miles at $7,500, and three Ford Interceptor Utilities from 2015 to 2018 with 92,000 to 120,000 miles at $5,250 to $7,000. The cheapest lot in the sale was a 2021 Dodge Durango SXT AWD with 47,411 miles and a salvaged title, $600.

Then there is the weather. Twenty-nine of the 67 lots carry the note "Hail Damage" on the state's list, nearly half, and the prices say buyers in Fargo shrug at it: a hail-damaged 2017 Fusion with 67,155 miles brought $10,750, the most of any Fusion, and a hail-damaged 2013 Ram 1500 with 84,828 miles brought $14,250. The dents are on the list because the state says so, and the state also says mileages can change and lots can be added or pulled up to sale time.

The 2024 Fargo sale was nearly the same shape: 70 lots, $796,250, the same $10,250 middle, Fusions at $8,750 to $9,500, Impalas $10,250 to $11,000, Traverses $9,000 to $11,250, Ram 1500s $9,750 to $16,000, and a 2012 Dodge Caravan with an ADA mobility package at $23,750. Bismarck's December 2025 sale, two weeks after Fargo, was bigger and ran higher at the top, with a 2018 Ram 3500 crew cab at $30,750, four GMC and Ford one-tons from $21,000 to $24,000, and nine police vehicles including three 2019 and 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe PPVs at $5,500 to $12,500 and six Interceptor Utilities at $4,500 to $9,500. It also had the two lots that should make every bidder read the notes: a 2023 Ford Escape AWD with 35,873 miles sold for $1,200 and a 2025 Chevrolet Malibu with 2,339 miles for $3,750, and a 2016 Explorer for $500. The price list does not say why, which is what the Tuesday viewing is for.

How to register and bid

The auction is online only. NDDOT's page says it plainly: there is no on-site bidding, and buyers bid from a computer, phone or tablet through Orr's bidding site, after registering there. Pre-bidding opens Wednesday, November 11, at 10 a.m., and the live webcast, with the auctioneer selling each lot in turn and online bids coming in against the pre-bids, runs Wednesday, November 18, from 10 a.m. Central. The lot list and photographs go up on Orr's site and NDDOT's roughly 15 days ahead, which puts it around November 3. In-person viewing is one day, Tuesday, November 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Fargo District yard, 503 38th Street South; NDDOT's auction line is 701-328-1472.

The terms are short. Every vehicle sells as is, no warranty, no guarantee, with the state's notes offered as a courtesy and not a disclosure; the sale is unreserved, so the high bid takes it; and a 2.9 percent buyer's premium applies to every purchase. The vehicle price is taxable in North Dakota and the premium is not. Payment is due in full the day of the sale, by check, cash or wire; the auctioneer is at the yard until 4 p.m. that day and from 9 a.m. to noon the next morning, and does not take credit cards. Government bodies can buy on a purchase order with payment within ten days. Every vehicle must be gone from the yard within seven business days, and nothing leaves without full settlement. Title transfer and registration are the buyer's job and the buyer's cost.

Why a state sale in Fargo is worth a look from anywhere

The prices are not the attraction; a $10,250 middle for a 60,000-mile sedan is a fair retail number, not a bargain, and the state's sales draw local dealers who know it. The attraction is the information. North Dakota tells you the mileage, the hail, the hoist cylinder that leaks and the odometer that was replaced, and then tells you what everyone paid, year after year, which makes it one of the few government sellers whose results can be checked against its catalog line by line. A bidder who reads the 2024 and 2025 Fargo lists and the Bismarck list knows what a state Fusion, Traverse, Ram or one-ton crew cab brings in this yard within a few hundred dollars before the webcast starts, and knows that the two or three lots in every sale that go for a fraction of the others have a reason that was visible on Tuesday.

UX Auctions will post the Fargo results when NDDOT publishes the price list, usually within the week, and the Bismarck results after December 2.
