Police Impound Auctions
Impounded Cars Sell for a Middle of $2,683 at New York Government Auctions. Suffolk County Police Sell 99 on November 21, From a 2024 RAV4 to a 1970 Chevelle, With a $500 Minimum.
Cars, trucks and SUVs sold at New York government auctions over the past year brought a middle price of $2,683 across 1,642 sales, and a Toyota Prius brought a middle of $3,100. On Saturday, November 21, the Suffolk County Police Department sells 99 more, indoors at its impound yard in Westhampton, with a $500 minimum bid on every vehicle and cash only. The list runs from a 2024 Toyota RAV4 and a 2019 Dodge Challenger to a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu and a 1976 Chevrolet Silverado.
WESTHAMPTON, NEW YORK — Suffolk County does not publish what its impounded vehicles sell for, so the closest measure is what the same kinds of vehicles bring at government sales across New York. Over the past year the UX Search sold archive recorded 2,606 closed New York government sales, and the 1,642 cars, trucks and SUVs among them sold at a middle price of $2,683, with the middle half between $1,050 and $6,100. By model, Toyota Prius sales had a middle of $3,100 across 75 sales, Nissan Rogues $3,850, Nissan Pathfinders $3,500, Toyota Camrys $3,550, Ford F-250s $3,300, Nissan Altimas $3,000 and Nissan Sentras $3,100. Chevrolet Impalas, most of them retired police cars, had a middle of $1,025 across 176 sales.
Every vehicle at the Suffolk sale starts at $500. That makes the floor of the sale close to the bottom quarter of what New York government vehicles bring, and the 99 lots on the November 21 list include the kinds of vehicles that have sold well above it.

What is on the list
The sale has three kinds of lots, marked on the county's list by letter. Nine are Public Administration vehicles, marked P, and they hold the sale's most unusual cars: a 2024 Toyota RAV4, a 2019 Kia Soul, a 2019 Dodge Challenger, a 2017 Honda Accord, a 2010 Accord, a 1982 Toyota Corolla, a 1989 Ford Tempo, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu two-door and a 1976 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Ten are Suffolk County Sheriff's vehicles, marked S, among them a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup, a 2009 Toyota Tacoma, a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, a 1991 Jeep Wrangler and a 2002 Volvo dump truck.
The other 80, marked A, are Suffolk County Police Department vehicles. The newest include a 2020 Honda HR-V, a 2018 Ford Explorer, a 2018 Jeep Compass, a 2018 Ford Taurus, a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300, a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2017 Kia Sportage. Further down are a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550, a 2008 Cadillac Escalade, a 2011 Acura MDX, five Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2003 to 2014, two 2015 Ram 1500 pickups, three Chevrolet Impalas from 2014, Toyota Prius hybrids from 2004, 2006 and 2010, and a run of work vehicles: Ford F-150 and F-250 pickups, a Toyota Tundra, a Nissan Titan and Frontier, Ford E-250 and Chevrolet Express vans and a 2013 Ford Transit Connect. A 2001 trailer rounds it out.
By body, the list has 45 sedans and coupes, 34 SUVs, 14 pickups, four vans, the dump truck and the trailer. Ninety-nine lots in all, from 1970 to 2024, with Toyota, Honda, Jeep, Nissan, Ford and Chevrolet making up most of them.

Titles, salvage certificates and keys
Nineteen of the 99 lots are marked on the list with a 907A salvage certificate, among them the 2020 Honda HR-V, the 2018 Jeep Compass and the 2018 Ford Taurus. New York issues that certificate for a vehicle with significant damage, a missing VIN tag, a mileage discrepancy or deployed airbags, and a 907A vehicle has to pass a physical inspection by DMV staff before it can be registered and titled. The county marks those vehicles with "907" on the windshield.
No titles are handed over at the sale. Buyers get a Suffolk County Police bill of sale and a copy of the auction notice, and take both to a Suffolk County DMV office within 30 days to title the vehicle. Vehicles that have keys are marked "KEY" on the windshield, and the keys come with the paperwork after payment in full. For vehicles 10 years old or newer, the county completes the DMV odometer statement, and an unreadable odometer is listed as 999999.
How to register and bid
Registration is in person only, at the impound facility, 100 Old Country Road, Westhampton, during the previews: Thursday, November 19, and Friday, November 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, November 21, from 8 to 9 a.m. Bidders must be 18 or older and show a valid government-issued ID, which is checked again at payment. To buy under a business name, bring a valid New York State tax ID card. The auction is held indoors, rain or shine, and bidding starts at 9 a.m.
Payment is cash only. A winning bid up to $2,000 is paid in full on the spot. Above $2,000, the buyer puts down a nonrefundable deposit of $2,000 plus 25 percent of the rest right away, so a $3,000 bid takes a $2,250 deposit, and the balance can be paid by an exact certified bank check. Full payment and removal are due within one business week, after which storage runs $30 a day. Buyers provide their own towing, and flatbeds are recommended.
