Buyer Story
Why This Government Auction Ford F-350 4×4 Sold for Only $5,250
A mechanic and his fiancée had been searching for one specific truck to pull their boat: a Ford F-350, two-door regular cab, 4×4, with an 8-foot bed. That setup is hard to find, and every time they spotted one online, it was either rusted out, beaten from plow duty, or worn down from heavy service work. They wanted a clean, stock truck — not a plow truck and not a salt-rotted fleet survivor.
After months of watching government auctions on UXAuctions.com, they finally found a batch of F-250s and F-350s listed by a highway maintenance department. Most were plow units, but a few two-door trucks looked different. The mechanic called the fleet manager, set an appointment, and the two of them went to inspect the trucks in person.
The inspection changed everything
The fleet manager was straightforward and helpful. He explained that the two-door trucks weren't plow units at all — they were summer construction trucks stored indoors during winter. No plow history, no severe abuse, and no hidden surprises beyond normal wear.
One truck had a bad repaint, and all three needed brakes and tires, but mechanically they were solid. A listing mentioned non-working heat and AC, which can signal head-gasket trouble, but the manager corrected it and encouraged them to test everything themselves. Everything worked. Underneath, only minor surface rust.
The $5,250 winning bid
On the way home, the mechanic researched past sales from the same agency. Similar trucks had sold for $6,000–$8,000. He planned to bid up to $7,000.
When bidding opened, all three trucks jumped from around $2,300 into the high $4,000s. He bid on each one, stopping around $5,000. Two sold for $7,000–$8,000, exactly where he expected. But the one he wanted — the one with the incorrect listing and mediocre paint — closed at $5,250. A 2012 Ford F-350 4×4, regular cab, 8-foot bed, 106,000 miles.
Turning a government truck into his truck
He replaced the brakes and front shocks, bought OEM aluminum rims for $250, installed a 3.5" leveling kit, and set it up for 37" tires. Body shops quoted prices he couldn't afford, so a local shop agreed to paint it for $1,100 if he did all the prep work. They taught him how to sand, prep bare metal, and prime correctly. It took nearly a month of evenings and weekends, but the final paint job looked excellent.
He added a bed toolbox and a few personal touches. The truck turned out better than they ever expected. People assume he paid top dollar for a rare, clean F-350 4×4. He's been offered $15,000–$17,000 for it. He turned every offer down.
They have about $7,000 total into the truck — plus a lot of sweat — and they know they won't find another one like it.
They're keeping it.
