This 1973 Cadillac Hearse Haunted a Minnesota City Garage Until Auction Day

Every October, haunted houses fire up their fog machines, front yards fill with skeletons, and movie fans dust off their favorite Halloween classics. But this year, one of the most interesting Halloween stories came from an unlikely place: a government auction in Minnesota.

Sitting on a gravel lot in Shakopee was a long, gray 1973 Cadillac hearse that looked like it had rolled straight out of a vintage horror movie. It wore rear curtains, classic landau bars, and decades of mystery. The city's description wasn't exactly encouraging.

Does not run. Flat tires. Windshield blown out.

Most vehicles would struggle to attract attention with a description like that. This hearse did the opposite.

By the time bidding ended, 20 bids had been placed on the old Cadillac as auction watchers imagined what they could do with one of the most Halloween-ready vehicles to appear on a government auction site this year.

The Hearse Nobody Saw Coming

The hearse came into the city's possession through tax-forfeited property and eventually landed on GovDeals for public auction. Parked alongside other forgotten vehicles, it looked more like a movie prop than an auction lot special.

Time had not been kind to the Cadillac. It didn't run. The tires were flat. The glass was damaged. Anyone buying it would need to haul it home on a trailer.

None of that seemed to matter.

For classic car enthusiasts, Halloween decorators, haunted attraction operators, and professional vehicle collectors, a 1973 Cadillac hearse is the kind of vehicle that rarely goes unnoticed.

The Final Minutes Were Alive With Bidding

As the closing clock ticked down, bidders began competing for ownership of the vintage funeral coach.

The price climbed through the final minutes as bidders traded offers back and forth. What started as another government auction listing suddenly became a race to the finish.

When the auction finally closed, the hearse sold for $325.

Including fees, the winning bidder's total came to $365.62.

Not bad for a vehicle that looks like it belongs in a Halloween parade.

Why Old Hearses Have a Following

Vintage hearses occupy a unique corner of automotive culture.

Some owners restore them to factory condition and display them at car shows. Others transform them into rolling Halloween attractions complete with props, lighting, and fog machines. Professional vehicle enthusiasts collect hearses, ambulances, and flower cars because they represent a specialized piece of automotive history that disappeared decades ago.

A 1973 Cadillac hearse checks all the boxes.

It has the dramatic styling, the unmistakable silhouette, and just enough character to make people stop and stare wherever it goes.

Even in rough condition, that combination can be hard to resist.

Government Auctions Are Full of Surprises

Most people visit government auction sites looking for pickup trucks, police vehicles, utility trailers, or surplus equipment.

Every now and then, something unusual appears.

A retired ambulance. A vintage fire truck. A forgotten classic car.

Or a fifty-year-old Cadillac hearse that arrives just in time for Halloween.

Somewhere in Minnesota, that old hearse is starting a new chapter with its new owner. Whether it becomes a show vehicle, a restoration project, or the centerpiece of next year's Halloween display, one thing is certain:

The bidding may be over, but this hearse's story is far from dead.
