The Johnston County Sheriff's Office is turning over its patrol fleet, and 15 of its Dodge Charger pursuit cars go to auction Sunday night in Smithfield, North Carolina. Every one has the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and rear-wheel drive, every one is listed as just passed inspection with no known problems, and the lineup runs from a 2023 to ten 2021s, most of them around 130,000 miles and one at 98,844. Four four-wheel-drive Tahoes driven by detectives and administrators are in the same sale, and there is no buyer's premium. North Carolina agencies sold 2021 Chargers at a middle price of $5,950 and 2020 Tahoes at $11,350 on GovDeals over the past year.
SMITHFIELD, NORTH CAROLINA — Johnston County sells its retired vehicles through Wester Auction & Realty of Four Oaks, and this fall's sale brings 33 lots from the Sheriff's Office, Public Utilities and a handful of other consignors to the county fleet yard at 20 Fleet Services Drive in Smithfield. Bidding is online only, and the lots begin closing Sunday, November 8, at 6 p.m., one after another. The county lets buyers see everything in person on Friday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
What sets this sale apart is how the cars are listed. Every one of the Chargers and Tahoes carries the same note, just passed inspection with no known problems, along with the exact mileage and 18 to 24 photos apiece. Wester charges no buyer's premium, so the winning bid is the price, and a transferable title comes with every vehicle unless the listing says otherwise.

The Chargers: 15 Hemi pursuit cars
The heart of the sale is the Sheriff's Office Charger fleet, all with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and rear-wheel drive. Lot 1 is a 2023 with 133,992 miles, the final model year of the Charger pursuit car before Dodge ended production, and it leads a group of ten 2021s, two 2020s and two 2016s. The 2021s show 128,303 to 134,618 miles, and the standout is lot 11, a 2021 with 98,844 miles, the lowest of the patrol cars. The 2020s in lots 12 and 13 show 129,343 and 130,127 miles, and the 2016s in lots 14 and 15 show 112,645 and 127,781.
North Carolina's own sales show where these cars land. Over the past year, North Carolina agencies sold 2021 Chargers on GovDeals at a middle price of $5,950, 2020s at $5,012.50 with a top sale of $12,000, and 2016s at $3,050 across 39 sales. Rose Hill sold a 2016 Charger for $2,804 just this Monday. The same 2020 Chargers bring more from the federal fleet, where GSA sold 72 of them at a middle price of $16,500, mostly with far lower miles.

The Tahoes: four detective and staff SUVs
The four Tahoes were driven by detectives and administrative staff rather than on patrol, and all four have the 5.3-liter V8 and four-wheel drive. Lot 16 is a white 2016 with 129,024 miles, lots 17 and 18 are 2014s with 125,544 and 129,256 miles, and lot 19 is a 2010 with 150,649 miles, and like the Chargers each one is listed as just passed inspection. North Carolina agencies sold Tahoes on GovDeals over the past year at a middle price of $4,100, with 2016s at $4,051 and a top sale of $13,000, and Wake Forest sold a 2020 Tahoe for $7,875 on October 30.

Pickups, trucks and trailers
The rest of the sale is working equipment from Public Utilities and other consignors. There are two 2020 Silverado 1500 4x4s with tow packages at 179,724 and 227,386 miles, the second listed as running but in need of work, a one-owner 2011 Silverado 1500 with 103,973 miles, new tires and a leather interior, a 2015 GMC Sierra, a 2015 GMC Denali, a 2017 F-250, a 2012 Chevy 2500 and a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab. A 2013 Ford F-650 dump truck with 100,366 miles and no reported issues is the biggest truck in the sale, and a 2004 Ford F-450 shuttle bus with 88,806 miles, a 2026 KL Manufacturing tandem-axle trailer and a 2025 tilt trailer rated at 10,000 pounds round it out.

Two for fun
Two private-consignor lots give the sale some weekend appeal. Lot 33 is a one-owner 2015 Ford Mustang convertible with the V6, 305 horsepower and 146,320 miles, described as carefully maintained and in excellent condition, and lot 32 is a completely refurbished 2016 Club Car President golf cart with a gas engine and a lift kit.

How to bid, pay and pick up
Bidding is online only at Wester Auction's site with a free account, and the lots begin closing Sunday, November 8, at 6 p.m. Eastern, with each closing extended briefly when a late bid comes in. There is no buyer's premium. Payment is due by 3 p.m. Monday, November 9, in cash, by cashier's check or by wire transfer, and nothing leaves the yard until it is paid. Pickup begins Monday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., once payment is received, and anything still on the lot after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, is charged storage.
